C. Use volunteers to disseminate information about USGS programs and Dieer`s science in general; z.B. seismic and volcanic risks and forecasting projects. (1) Voluntary service must be performed for the purpose of fulfilling the USGS mission and with the realization that volunteers must abide by ethical rules as a condition for obtaining and maintaining honorary status within the USGS. (For more information, see “Volunteer for Science Handbook, 500-23-H, Chapter 3, Ethics.”) 2. Volunteers may not use their volunteer status for personal financial gain or for the benefit of another person or institution. B. If necessary, call on volunteers as members of local teams or networks to monitor and observe scientific phenomena. (2) Direct family members and other USGS staff may work as volunteers. You may work in the same office or for the same contract with USGS staff, but of-301A cannot be signed by USGS related staff, and USGS staff cannot authorize reimbursement of travel expenses or payment per day of a volunteer with whom the usgs is linked. The UsGS Directive allows the travel costs of voluntary service provided by a parent of a staff member involved in a project or a joint contract with the employee to be paid. However, the appropriate paying agency or its designer may authorize these costs in exceptional cases.
